moa johansson is an interdisciplinary artist, designer and maker who works primarily in textile and performance. much like fabric, with qualities of resistance and malleability, offering endless possibilities in creation, moa considers the body as a material to be stitched, knotted, pinned, folded and rearranged. their work explores, in subtle and often humorous ways, a ‘textile queering’, through the subversion and reappropriation of fabrics, fixings and garments. there is a deep ethical and ecological sensibility to moa’s work; by repurposing, recycling and reconfiguring materials found at hand or used previously, they address the politics of consumption, explore new materialsim and see limitations as invitations and potentials.
moa johansson is based between london and stockholm. they have made costumes and set for unicorn theatre, sadlers wells, ginger johnson, midgette bardot and konstgruppen ful among others. moa has presented work in galleries and performance contexts across the uk and europe including: southwark park galleries (2024); moderna museet, skissernas museum, tramway (2023); slug gallery, cambridge junction, röda sten konsthall (2022); midlands arts centre, humber street gallery (2019) and summerhall (2018).
